Commercial Ice Making Machine By Maxx Johnson

Maxx Johnson

A commercial ice making machine is important piece of restaurant equipment for any restaurant, bar, concession stand, resort or country club. All of these facilities use large amounts of ice in order to meet the customer demand at different times throughout the day. As a manager or employee, it is miserable to run out of ice while in your peak business period of the day.

As these types of facilities depend on a commercial ice making machine to make the ice for the many beverages that are served. In order to create a good experience for your customers, having ice to provide cold beverages is a must to any business that is going to survive. If receiving a warm happens once to a customer, they may come back. If this happens to them twice, you have lost a customer. In addition, they will not recommend your facility to others and you have lost that free advertising.

Thinking of it in these terms will definitely give you new perspective about how important it is for you to do your homework and select the best commercial ice making machine for your facility. You must properly determine the correct size of the unit. In these economic times, many try to cut this too close and put themselves at risk of running out of ice in their peak times. This is really silly when in most cases you are talking about a few hundred dollars difference in order to make sure that this does not happen.

You will also want to know the specifics of the regular maintenance that will be need for the commercial ice making machine. This would include any warranty that is available upon purchase of the unit. You will also want to inquire about customer support via online or via the telephone. Some companies include this as a service and other companies include a fee. This is an area where asking questions are important as sometimes the fees are higher at night and on the weekends than during normal business hours.

In recent years, innovations have allowed commercial ice making machines to become smaller and more space-efficient as well as increasing production. As in every commercial kitchen, space is a premium. Units now come as under counter ice machines, countertop ice machines and stand alone ice machines to assist in creating the most efficient space in any commercial kitchen. Having a smartly laid out kitchen will help your staff provide a quality product and in turn will give you happy customers.

When you are making your purchase, you will need to know if you are purchasing a modular ice machine with no ice bin or a unit that includes a commercial ice bin.

Again, most people take for granted how important a commercial ice making machine is to a facility such as a snack bar, salad bar or high school concession stand. It can literally make or break the experience for your customers and in turn can make or break your revenues.

What is a Blended Whisky? By Derek Rogers

Derek Rogers

A blended whisky is made when different kinds of whisky are mixed together, typically mixing a 100% malt whisky, with another derivative, which will often be created using different grains and other ingredients to the purer malt. It is not unusual to have anywhere from 15 to 40 different single malt whiskies and grain whiskies in a blended whisky.

Because of blending, it is possible to take several inferior tasting whiskies and come up with a unique whisky blend that is better tasting than any of the individual whisky types it contains. Distilleries can take years acquiring the art of a blended whisky which contains malt and grain whiskies that complement each other and have a unique and palatable taste.

Blending is an art which may involve experimentation to achieve the best flavouring. Blending in no way dilutes the whisky, in fact additional flavour can be achieved through the aging time and type of wood used for the aging cask. It’s important to note that in Scotland, whisky must be aged at least 3 years before it can be classified as whisky. It’s not unusual for some whisky to be aged for more than 20 years, which adds to the flavour, much the same principle as wine.

A single malt whisky is considered the best by purist whisky drinkers and a blend is considered inferior, since blended whisky uses other ingredients which act as fillers for flavouring. Grain alcohol is an ingredient on any bottles that are “blended whisky”, as opposed to “blended Malt whisky” or vatted malt, which means that it is a blend of only malt whisky, in different formulations. Typically, blends may have 65 to 85% grain whisky and 15 to 35% malt whisky.

It’s not unusual to have blended whisky that has a sweet taste of honey, a smoked flavour, a fruity flavour or something else entirely. Many whisky drinkers actually prefer blended whisky because they are sometimes smoother and have better flavours. Blenders also may mix caramel in for colour uniformity.

In blending, the grain whiskies are neutral and the single malt whiskies are what might bring the flavour. Certain malt whisky, such as Island or Islay malts have a spicy rich flavour, while Speyside malts may have a smoky, fruit, apple or sherry character.

Once a successful blend of whisky has been achieved, the blender has to determine demand in the future and has to decide when the different single malt whiskies will be ready to use in a blend versus grain whiskies. In other words, flavour enhancement can come in varying ages, where some might peak at 5 years and others might take 10 or 12 years.

Once they have reached maturity, they will be mixed in a blending vat and returned to the aging cask for the flavours to mingle for months, in order to improve flavor; although there are some distilleries that bring them together in the bottling stage. The process of combining malt whisky with other malt or grain whisky is known as vatting, which is why you may hear blended whisky also referred to as vatted whisky.

Blended whisky is a certain recipe of different whiskies that have a distinct taste, and most whisky drinkers tend to stick with certain blends, once they have found the one they prefer most.

Spend a Relaxing Day Visiting the Amador Wineries By Rick Keel

Rick Keel

The wineries of Amador County offer a relaxing day of wine tasting in a rural foothill setting. The wineries are about forty-five minutes southeast of Sacramento located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Northern California. There are over 40 wineries in Amador County with most of them in the beautiful and historic Shenandoah Valley in Plymouth, California.

The Amador County wineries are a pleasant alternative to the wineries of the Napa Valley. The wines are less expensive and the tasting rooms less crowded. The wineries are family-owned and operated and offer a casual and friendly environment with complimentary wine tasting. The short distance between wineries is also a plus, especially if you want to spend the entire day there and take in as many wineries as possible.

The region is known for its Zinfandel wines but many other varietals are produced as well. Some of the vineyards are more than 125 years old. Vineyards in the area were first planted right after the Gold Rush with many them still in use today.

The first winery you will come to in the Shenandoah Valley, driving on Shenandoah Road coming from Plymouth, will be Young’s Vineyard on the right. The winery has beautiful setting with a large pond and offers relaxing grounds to enjoy a picnic. The staff here is friendly and the wine is very good. They offer several wines including; Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Syrah, Sangiovese and Barbera. The owner of Young’s Vineyard is also an artist. She creates the designs on their wine bottle labels.

After stopping at Youngs turn right on Shenandoah School Road. Down this road is where you will find Montevina Winery. Montevina offers full-flavored red wines, with the Zinfandel and Barbera popular favorites. They have a large tasting room with a gift shop enclosed. While here try sampling their peach salsa. I always purchase a jar to take with me. The winery also has a covered picnic area adjacent to the tasting room.

Continue on Shenandoah School Road and you will come back to Shenandoah Road. Cross the road and it turns into Steiner Road, where you will come across Deaver Vineyards and Charles Spinetta Winery. Deaver is one of the most popular wineries in the area and features award winning Zinfandels. The winery is a great place for a picnic with large grounds, a well-keep green grass lawn, and a beautiful lake. They had several picnic tables under the trees right on the edge of the lake. Charles Spinetta Winery has a wonderful art gallery upstairs from the tasting room. The gallery offers 3,000 square foot of wildlife artwork. The winery has several varieties of wine including; Zinfandel, Petite Syrah, and Barbera. They also offer Orange Muscat and several other sweet wines. The wine bottles labels also feature wildlife artwork.

Stay on Steiner Road until you loop back to Shenandoah Road again and turn left. Just up the way on Shenandoah Road off to the right side is Sobon Estate. Sobon is a family owned winery that has been designated as a California State Historic Landmark. The winery is known for its historical vineyards and old vine Zinfandel. They offer Rhone varietals, vineyard designated Zinfandels, and tasting room-only dessert wines. Sobon also has a unique wine museum which is beneath the tasting room.

Come back down Shenandoah Road and turn right onto Bell Road. Take the road all the way to the end and you will reach Story Winery. Story has fantastic views of the valley and also offers several picnic tables in the shade of large trees. The winery has a small tasting room with a large wood deck surrounding it. They also offer barrel tasting down the hill from the parking lot in one of their large buildings. Story has a variety of Zinfandels and champagnes. The last time I visited Story they accommodated the crowd by having champagne tasting on the outside deck while the wine tasting was inside in the tasting room.

Go back to Shenandoah Road and turn right, down the road on the left you will see Villa Toscano Winery. They have beautiful grounds with statues and a fountain that is in the style of a Tuscan winery. The winery offers a large tasting room complete with barrel tasting. The gift shop is one of the largest in Amador and has many unique items such an old grandmother’s clock. Villa Toscano has award-winning vintages of Zinfandel and Syrah and is the only winery in the area that offers food including; soup, salads, sandwiches and pizza.

Spend the day visiting the wineries of Amador County and you will enjoy a day of tasting great wines in the beautiful and relaxing setting of the Sierra Foothills. The friendliness of the owners and staff at the wineries along with less expensive cost of the wines make the Amador wineries well worth the visit.

Wine Bottle Cooler: A Good Investment By Maxx Johnson

Maxx Johnson

The feeling you get from the phrase wine bottle cooler is exactly what it means. A wine bottle cooler just helps you to store your wine in a desired temperature to keep the flavor the best that it can be and the taste of your wine does not get spoiled. In an ideal wine refrigerator, you can always set a temperature to keep the bottles within the proper temperature range of 52 and 65 degrees.

A wide of variety of restaurant equipment dealers are available and have a wine refrigerator as an offering. You will simply be amazed seeing the wide collection of these coolers. They come in many different sizes to fit into any space. Different sizes let you to store varying number of bottles of wine at same time as well as best utilizing the space that you have.

If you are planning to purchase a unit to be used at your home, then under counter refrigerators could be the best chioce for you. You can choose a unit that will perfectly match the style of your kitchen or your small bar at home. In contrast, if you intend to have a commercial use with the unit, you are again able to find large various-sized coolers. These larger types of coolers can be found useful in restaurants, country clubs, resorts, pubs, sports bars and night clubs.

Most of the wine bottle coolers available in the market today allow you to store and chill the bottles upside down. This is important as you can ensure that wine is always in touch with the cork. Storing the bottles upside down will protect the cork from drying out. If the cork does dry out, it will damage its air-tight feature and also will change the taste of your wine.

Some of the units come with glass doors. Tinted glasses are installed on these units to block any direct light or daylight from entering into cooler. Obviously, allowing your wine bottles to be exposed to light can again change the taste of the wine. In addition, you and your friends can have a nice view inside, to your wonderful wine collection.

The best wine bottle coolers will allow you to arrange the bottles so that when the cooler door opens, bottles will not collide with each other. This prevents any accidental breakage of bottles.

A wine bottle cooler with multiple refrigerated cabinets are currently in high demand. A wonderful feature offered in many high-end units such as Beverage Air products, is that you can set different desired temperature in each of the cabinet. As you might already know, ideal temperatures for red and white wines are about 60 and 45 degreed respectively. So these multiple cabinet models allow you to make sure that each flavor gets the perfect temperature while in storage.

If one of your hobbies is collecting exotic or expensive wines, then a wine bottle cooler is a worthwhile investment. Not only will it protect your investment but it will also protect the taste of your investment for when you are ready to drink it.

Choosing The Right Wine Tote Or Wine Carrier By Olivia Thomas

Olivia Thomas

Choosing the right wine tote does not have to keep you up at night, but it does require a little thought. Let’s go over the different types of wine totes & carriers and where they are best used. First, if your looking for a quick answer here it is... Get two! One that holds one bottle of wine and one that holds two bottles of wine. There are many occasions that call for both, so by having both at your finger tips, you can avoid having to 'brown' bag it. It is very classy to show up at a party or a “BYOB” restaurant with your wine in it’s own carrier.

The wine tote that holds one bottle is great for those occasions that are more intimate. Picnicking with your honey, a cozy dinner for two. You could also use a single bottle wine tote if you are meeting a group of friends and everyone is bringing some vino for all too enjoy. One of the secrets about the single bottle wine tote is if your wine carrier also holds a couple wine glasses, you can usually remove the glasses and turn your one bottle wine tote into a two bottle wine tote. This trick may also be used to to turn your two bottle tote into a three bottle wine tote. Of coarse, it will depend on the design and style of the wine tote to do this trick.

The two bottle wine tote is the most versatile. It allows you to bring a white and a red or a red and a bottle of champagne, or two reds, I think you get the picture. Plus, by having that extra bottle of wine you wont run into trouble when the couple you are meeting for dinner forgets to bring a bottle. Believe me, there is nothing worse then showing up to a BYOB restaurant with 1 bottle of wine to share between 4 or more people. By the time you have a glass just catching up with your friends you have nothing left for your meal.

The three bottle wine tote is usually designated to the serious wine lover and the person who likes to have lots of choices. I can say that there has been times when I wish I had a few options. Don't get me wrong, the wine I carry to a restaurant is something I want to drink no matter what I decide to eat for dinner, but sometimes you decide to get the tilapia fish special and you have a nice bottle of white wine sitting in your wine fridge at home.

The most important things to look for when buying a wine tote is a pocket inside that will hold a corkscrew. Good quality wine totes, like the ones from Rhino Wine Gear, will come with a corkscrew and a nice pocket to store it in. Corkscrews are affordable enough that you should never be stuck without one. I recommend keeping one in your car in case of a wine emergency.

Make Your Family Addicted to Home Cooking Instead of Fast Food By Sunil Punjabi

Sunil Punjabi

Being at a fast food joint might be a teen's privilege because it is the age when he starts to hang out with his friends and get initiated into the pizza-burger circuit. His parents might have equal rights to be inside a fast food joint because they are hard pressed for time, and if they want to grab a bite during the lunch recess or on their way back home from office, a fast food eatery might be the best refuge. And when everyone in the family is having their share of pizzas and chips and fries and coke, how can they deny it to the kid brother? So he too gets his fill. In short, everybody gets his share of fast food, but hardly ever its alternative, which is home cooking.

However, things are a bit on the reverse gear these days, and that is a welcome trend. Both the Internet and the print media are doing yeoman service here, because they offer an endless variety of free recipes and easy recipes. All these can help in improving the quality and variety of home cooking, which will definitely give a fillip to de-addicting people from fast food dependency. And fast food addicts would also do well to calculate the money that they are spending on these fast food goodies, which also go by the name junk food. With half the money that is spent on a junk food meal, people can have healthy and fresh home cooked vegetarian food. Interest in vegetarian delicacies is also a current trend, and is amply aided by the vegetarian recipes that are doing the rounds on the Internet these days.

Whether you want to eat to live, or live to eat, recipes could be an ideal answer to both. There are plenty of veg recipes that are remarkably fat free and have a high content of vitamins and minerals that are required by the body. These veg recipes are the perfect antidote to fast food, which drip with fat and aid obesity. However, there are plenty of non-vegetarian home cooking recipes also, that have low calorie value and high nutritive value and are easy to prepare. Some of these can be as tantalizingly attractive as fast food but will not do half the harm that fast food does. These provide step-by-step guidelines for preparation, including directions for the right way of garnishing.

Vegan recipes appeal to different people for different reasons. There are animal rights activists who swear by vegetarian food and so are always searching for new veg recipes. Then there are people who avoid eating non-vegetarian food for health reasons. Whether you are vegetarian or non-vegetarian, it is better to master a few veg recipes, because a certain amount vegetables have to be part of a person's daily diet. Having said that, chicken and mutton are kings of the cooking pot and vegetables can never completely replace them. There are elaborate recipes for preparing meat and fish, and some of the meat preparations are perfect home cooking recipes, even if they are a bit time consuming. No harm in trying out a couple of elaborate ones on festival days and holidays and you can ask the rest of the family also to join in the efforts. When you ask them to be a part of your cooking ventures, whether these dishes are based on easy recipes, or elaborate ones, you will be giving them the first lessons in home cooking and in the importance of keeping off fast foods.

Vegetarian Recipes - What is the Difference in Veg and Vegan Recipes? By Sunil Punjabi

Sunil Punjabi

Humans have been eating meat and animal products for many millennia, ever since evolution began and they evolved from apes. Vegetarianism on the other hand is a few thousand years old, and Veganism is just a few decades old and is an extreme form or subset of vegetarianism, where all animal products are avoided. Whatever food is consumed, whether meat based, veg, or vegan, cooking is an integral part of eating food and this requires Recipes. There are thousands of Vegetarian Recipes, Vegan Recipes and Recipes for meat based dishes that are available on hundreds of websites.

Some of these Home cooking recipes have been handed down through generations from mother to daughter and mother-in-law to daughter-in-law. Although humans have been consuming vegetables and plant products, along with meat and other animal products, for many millennia, vegetarianism dissuades consumption of all types of meat, and eggs too. Some communities do not consider eggs as a non-vegetarian item, but in countries like India, eggs are not considered vegetarian and are not consumed by strict vegetarians. Many individuals are used to meat and egg based dishes, along with a few veggies in salads and soups. But they are unaware that there are thousands of Veg Recipes available that can be used to make a complete meal, including soups, starters, appetizers, main course dishes, and desserts.

Vegetarianism evolved with religions and cultures over many millennia. Many religions like Buddhism, Jainism, and Hinduism have strict rules regarding food consumption. Meat and eggs, and products made from these are strictly prohibited in many religions, castes, and communities. Thus evolved the dependence on vegetables, fruits, herbs, and spices. This led to the evolution of Vegetarian Recipes over the millennia, with each caste, community, and even individual households having their own variations of standard recipes and ways to cook food. Vegetarianism is gaining ground in western countries like the US, UK, and Europe, but the opposite is happening in Eastern countries like India, where people are becoming more aware of western meat dishes and recipes.

Although vegetarianism does not exclude animal products like milk, and products made from milk, like butter, Ghee, sweets, chocolates, desserts, ice creams, etc, Veganism excludes these too. Donald Watson and Elsie Shringley started veganism and the Vegan Society in 1944. Veganism excludes all animal products as food, including milk and milk products. Anything that involves exploitation of animals for food, clothing, or any purpose is excluded for use. As veganism evolved, so did Vegan Recipes, which excluded all animal products for food consumptions. Veganism still includes all vegetables, fruits, herbs, and spices, and there are hundreds of Recipes available for vegans.

Although Fast food and eating out in restaurants has become a necessity due to the hectic lifestyle, many families are turning back to healthy home cooking and the recipes handed down from past generations are coming in handy. Many individuals are also willing to try new Veg Recipes, meat and egg based Recipes and even Vegan Recipes. As they say, variety is the spice of life, and adding some variety to daily meals is sure to entice the family back to the dining table, instead of ordering pizzas and burgers, or taking the family out to lunch and dinner, which is an expensive affair.

Fast-Food and Diabetes
Keep the ground rules of good nutrition in mind. Eat a variety of foods in moderate amounts, limit the amount of fat you eat, and watch the amount of salt in food. Follow the guidelines you've worked out with your dietitian or doctor. It's easy to eat an entire day's worth of fat, salt, and calories in just one fast-food meal. But it's also possible to make wise choices and eat a fairly healthy meal.

•Know that an average fast-food meal can run as high as 1000 calories or more, and raise your blood sugar above your target range.
•Know the nutritional value of the foods you order. Although there are some good choices, most fast-food items are high in fat and calories.
•If you're having fast-food for one meal, let your other meals that day contain healthier foods, like fruits and vegetables.
•Think about how your food will be cooked. Chicken and fish can be good choices - but not if they are breaded and deep fried.
If breakfast is your fast-food meal, choose a plain bagel, toast, or English muffin. Other muffins may be loaded with sugar and fat. Add fruit juice or low-fat or fat-free milk. Order cold cereal with fat-free milk, pancakes without butter, or plain scrambled eggs. Limit bacon and sausage because they are high in fat.

The fast food we eat may stick around a lot longer than we'd like. It may linger in our bodies as excess blood fats and extra pounds.

•Watch out for words like jumbo, giant, deluxe, biggie-sized or super-sized. Larger portions mean more calories. They also mean more fat, cholesterol and salt. Order a regular or junior-sized sandwich instead.
•Choose grilled or broiled sandwiches with meats such as lean roast beef, turkey or chicken breast, or lean ham. Order items plain, without toppings, rich sauces, or mayonnaise. Add flavor with mustard, and crunch with lettuce, tomato, and onion.
•Skip the croissant or biscuit. Eat your sandwich on a bun, bread or English muffin and save calories and fat.
•Stay away from double burgers or "super" hot dogs with cheese, chili, or sauces. Cheese carries an extra 100 calories per ounce, as well as added fat and sodium.
•Go for the salad bar, but watch out for high-fat toppings like dressings, bacon bits, cheeses, and croutons. Even too much low-calorie dressing can add up. Check the calories on the packet. Also limit salad bar items that are dressed with a lot of mayo, such as potato or macaroni salad. Fill your salad with things like carrots, peppers, onion, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, and etc.
•Order bean burritos, soft tacos, fajitas, and other non-fried items when eating Mexican fast foods. Choose chicken over beef. Limit refried beans. Or ask if they have beans that aren't refried. Pile on extra lettuce, tomatoes, and salsa. Go easy on cheese, sour cream, and guacamole. Watch out for deep-fried taco salad shells - a taco salad can have more than 1,000 calories!
•Pizza can be a good fast food choice. Go for thin crust pizza with vegetable toppings. Limit to 1-2 slices. Meat and extra cheese add calories, fat and sodium.
•End your meal with sugar-free, fat-free frozen yogurt or a small cone of fat-free yogurt. Better still, bring a piece of fresh fruit from home. Ices, sorbets, and sherbets have less fat and fewer calories than ice cream. But they are chock full of sugar. They can send your blood sugar too high if you don't work the extra carbohydrate into your meal plan.
•Be alert for traps. Fat-free muffins for breakfast may have plenty of sugar. Skinless fried chicken can have almost as much fat as the regular kind. Chinese food may seem like a healthy choice, but many dishes are deep fried or high in fat and sodium, especially in the sauces.
Eating out can be one of life's great pleasures. Make the right choices, ask for what you need, and balance your meals out with healthy meals at home. You can enjoy yourself and take good care of your diabetes at the same time.

Believe it or not, you can make healthy fast-food choices after all health is your and your body accept it for your family. Eat with care.

A Review of Vita Rawstaurant - A New Vegan Addition to Green Bay's Downtown By Patricia Summerfield

Patricia Summerfield

New to the Green Bay area is Vita, a vegan raw restaurant. It is vegan cuisine using seeds, grains, nuts, organic fruits and vegetables and never cooking anything over 118 degrees. Vita is located in Green Bay's historic Broadway district and took years of planning and preparation. However the results are worth it. Everything is made from scratch and can be time consuming, so if you are in a hurry, especially during peak dining hours, they do have a sign posted in the window to warn you the food could take up to an hour if it is very busy. Vita would be best suited for a leisurely lunch or dinner.

The restaurant is delightfully decorated giving off a serene atmosphere with grass green colored walls and tiffany lamps with soothing music playing in the back ground. The tables are all different styles with fresh flowers, rock crystals, and earth colored linen napkins on every table. The interior of the restaurant has many plants arranged throughout, including a beautiful orchid, many assorted pictures, and two counters one facing the window with high back cushioned chairs and one curved counter towards the back with more seating. The hallway towards the restrooms was totally redone with new rose colored floor tiles, hanging cloth tapestries, and newly plastered walls with all new bathrooms fixtures. It was decorated warmly with lamps and oriental pictures. Every detail was touched upon, everything was immaculate, a nice ambiance to match the environment and cuisine.

There was sufficient staff on hand who were well informed of the menu. They were very helpful, and friendly. I ordered their single avocado sandwich for $5.50, a single tuna sandwich (made without using any real tuna fish) which was the special of the day for $5.50, and for my beverage I ordered a carbonated grapefruit water for $2.50. The water was served in a very tall clear glass with a nice large thick round slice of lime making it look as refreshing as it tasted. The sandwiches were served open faced, and the base of both sandwiches was made with caraway rye bread brushed with coconut oil. The cracker was thin with a soft crunchy texture and the coconut oil made for a great chemistry which I loved. The sandwiches were both layered with cucumbers, marinated mushrooms, sliced cherry tomatoes, red onion, and za'taar pumpkin seeds and topped with huge fresh sunflower sprouts. The avocado sandwich had a nice amount of fresh sliced avocados. The tuna was a blended mixture of cashew, dill, celery, sunflower seeds, and more, they had just made it up that day, it had a titillating distinct fresh flavor which was very delicious. I enjoyed both sandwiches very much. They also have soups, smoothies, and organic wine and beer. The owner was trained and certified in raw cooking in Chicago. It is great to have another new choice for dining in the Green Bay area. This restaurant adds a little something to those looking for something a little different from the ordinary.

Choosing The Perfect Kitchen Knife By Guy Bridge

Guy Bridge

Kitchen and cooking knives come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, ranging from small garnishing knives to heavy cleavers and choppers. The only problem is they all have different purposes and work better with certain foods, so it is important to choose the perfect kitchen knife to suit all of your cooking needs.

Choosing a Kitchen Knife

Because everyone has their own cooking and cutting preferences, there really isn't one knife that is the best for every kitchen. You will want to choose a knife that works best on the types of food you use in your home, such as vegetables, breads, meats, etc.You will also need to choose between a straight edge and serrated edge knife, since they perform very differently from one another. A straight edge is great for cutting soft items like tomatoes, since it has a very sharp edge that can slice through almost anything. A serrated edged knife actually works like a small saw, and is ideal for cutting bread with a sawing action without squishing the food.

Buying a Kitchen Knife

When looking to buy a kitchen knife, you will want to look for individual pieces rather than knife sets. Although it can be more expensive this way, it is well worth the price to purchase a top-quality knife. In order to ensure you are buying a knife that will last for years, you will want to purchase one made out of stain-resistant, high carbon steel. Although they do require regular maintenance, they are the best of the best and will provide a very sharp blade that will last for years to come. You will also want to look at how the handle is attached, since knifes that are only glued into the handle can break very easily. Instead, buy a knife where the blade extends all the way down the handle, and is covered by the handle and held in place. Breaking the blade is nearly impossible, so you can rest assured your knife will last as long as you would like.

Types of Kitchen Knifes

There are all types of kitchen knifes to choose from, so you will need to pick something that works best for your specific cooking needs. The chef knife is one of the most popular and versatile kitchen knifes available, since it consists of a large sharp blade that can cut through almost anything. The wide blade is great for chopping, slicing, and even dicing, and the curved shape makes it possible to rock the knife back and forth making it easy to use. A paring knife is like a small garnish knife, and is ideal for small tasks like taking the core out of an apple. It has a very small blade and is usually best for cutting small items. A bread knife is another popular knife found in many homes, and usually consists of a very long serrated blade. It is ideal for sawing through bread and other soft items, but doesn't work well for chopping hard items like vegetables.

Caring For Your Knifes

Like most other items in your kitchen, your knives must be cared for. Straight edge blades need to be sharpened on a regular basis, while serrated knives actually never need to be sharpened. You will want to make sure and take care when using the knife, since hitting it down on a hard surface while cutting can actually dull the blade. Instead, you should use a soft cutting board to prevent any damage from occurring. Knives should be washed by hand and dried immediately, and should never be put in the dishwasher for cleaning. The detergent can actually dull the knife, and they can even become rusted depending on the type of metal the knife is made out of.

Taking care of your kitchen knife is important, especially if you purchase a high quality knife. It will help the knife to last longer and keep the blade sharp, and make it the perfect companion for your kitchen.
